Description: ROBERT M. HAMADA - MASTER WOODTURNER by Pattie H. Miyashiro and published by Hamada in 2004. 60 page softcover covers the life, techniques, wood choices and exhibits his outstanding work in full color. Very good condition. Signed by artist on title page. Called "the dean of island wood-turners" by The New York Times, Robert M. Hamada was a self-taught wood artist on the island of Kauai. He used choice Hawaiian woods, such as milo and hau, to forge a new style of Hawaiian calabash, which set the standard for modern island woodworking. Hamada's artwork is in the permanent collections of Honolulu Museum of Art; High Museum of Art; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; and Detroit Institute of Fine Arts; and in hundreds of private collections around the world. He received two Living Treasure awards, the first from Kauai Museum in 2001 and the second from Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii in 2014. Hamada's artwork was also selected for the U.S. State Department's Arts in Embassies Program and was on display at the U.S. Embassy in Bangladesh in 2000. With an artistic career that spanned more than seventy years, this book is a retrospective of Robert Hamada's artistry and, in his own words, he guides you through a sampling of his creations. Seasoned by the challenges and joys of life, each masterpiece mirrors the heart and soul of the artist. Robert Hamada died in December 2014 at age 93.
