Phoenicia, Tyre shekel - Judas 30 Pieces of Silver Bible Coin-NGC graded Fine

Description: The shekel of Tyre was a silver coin minted in the Phoenician city of Tyre from 126 BC to 57 AD. It was the only currency accepted at the Jerusalem Temple and was a popular coin in the bible. It was the coinage used to pay Judas for betraying Jesus and was a prominent feature in New Testament stories. The obverse of the coin features the head of Melqart, the Phoenician god of Tyre, who is also known as “Baal” or “Heracles.” The reverse of the coin depicts and eagle standing on a ship’s prow with a palm branch in the background. The coin’s legend in Greek reads “Tyre Sacred and Inviolable Sanctuary.” NGC graded Fine. Purchased from Venus Galleries in Jerusalem in 2002.
