This is the first issue of a series that ran continuously until the 80's,but the original Joe Palooka was created by Ham Fisher in 1930, andran in syndicated newspapers. This was an early Golden Age comic version.Designed as a "give-away" to promote re-accommodation by veterans coming back from WWII with injuries or deficits, Joe Palooka would serveas an example of the "fight-back" attitude (Joe had a shoulder injury in the story),that would lead to a complete recovery. With the classic boxing cover (which incidentally included his injury ina highlight bubble), its an amazing example of a clean, well-preservedGolden Age classic, read by literally millions of veterans.Low census numbers indicate these were well-read.
